The Most Overlooked Thumbnail Style on YouTube

Most people think thumbnails need to have tension, stakes, and of course “create curiosity”.

And while those are all powerful forms of intrigue, there's another type that almost nobody talks about — Aesthetic.

Think about the lo-fi music videos we scroll through each day:

They're not telling an elaborate story, they're conveying a feeling.

  • The ocean terrace isn't just a pretty view. The coffee, the dessert, the open book, the flowers, and the cozy bed all help you feel like you’re actually enjoying a peaceful moment out there.
  • The duck illustration isn't just cute. The soft pastel colors, playful character, and encouraging message create a feeling of comfort and positivity.
  • The whimsical image uses sparkling lights, old school animation styles, and warm, rainbow colors to make us feel a sense of nostalgia, wonder, and inspiration.
  • The study room isn't simply about being productive. The warm lighting, nighttime cityscape, cup of coffee, handwritten notebook, and cat companion romanticize the idea of being productive and make us want to experience that cozy atmosphere ourselves.

None of these images create tension or a “curiosity gap”.

They set the mood for you in real life, and create a moment you yourself wish you could step into; moments of peace, coziness, nostalgia, motivation, & more.

And this isn't unique to lo-fi music videos.

You see the same psychology in niches like Vlog, Travel, Filmmaking, Art, and others.

The viewer isn't clicking to find out “what happens” — they're clicking because they want to experience the feeling the thumbnail promises.

  • The Romanticized City Life (Vlog) – The morning sunlight, the huge windows, the cityscape, and the deep, cozy couch make ordinary moments feel so peaceful and comforting.
  • The Escape Into Nature (Travel) – Being at the base of lush green mountains, in a lake you have all to yourself, creates a feeling of freedom, adventure, and being completely disconnected from everyday life. The creator being so small in comparison to the grand nature setting also creates a sense of hope and endless possibilities.
  • The Quiet Creative Morning (Filmmaking) – The soft lighting, warm colors, and focused artist create a sense of calm and contentment of slowly working on something meaningful. We want to feel what it’s like to be sat directly in front of a window, working intentionally on a watercolor piece in this calming, green room.
  • The Artist's Studio (Art) – The artwork, record player, guitar, low cushy chair, and noticeably lived-in and personalized space romanticizes the idea of being an artist. The details in the image make you want to step into her studio, look through her creations, feel more creative and inspired overall, and maybe even envision yourself in your own studio one day.

It is true - sometimes you have to create thumbnails with tension that create curiosity within viewers.

But other times you can simply convey an emotion viewers want to feel, or create a world that they want to step into.

It’s true - Simplistic thumbnails aren't always better. One of the most common thumbnail rules you'll hear is to "Simplify your thumbnail." That can be good advice, but it’s not quite that simple. (Simply simplifying isn’t simple - ha!) I've seen people simplify thumbnails too much, to where they accidentally remove key elements that help build up the story or the scene in the thumbnail. The goal isn’t necessarily to make your thumbnail as clean as possible, it’s to make it as intriguing as...

We all know AI still makes a lot of mistakes. Especially when it comes to making things look realistic - Logos turn to mush, details get warped, and sometimes the more you ask it to generate, the more obviously AI-generated the image gets. But there are a few effective workarounds you can use to get much more realistic results. Here are 3 methods that I’ve found especially useful: Method 1: Don’t Generate Entire Images All at Once AI tends to make more mistakes when you give it more things to...
